How to push start a car
This one is really simple but works only on manual transmission automobiles.
Here are the steps to push-start a car with a dead battery:
- Make sure that the handbrake is released and the automobile’s air conditioning, radio and other devices are switched off.
- Sit behind the wheel and put the car on 1st or 2nd gear.
- Depress the clutch
- Have the car pushed, as fast as possible.
- When the car is running, release the clutch. the car’s engine should start.
- If it doesn’t, go over the steps again but this time, gently depress the accelerator to feed the engine with a little gas.
What I do whenever I suspect that my car has weak batteries, is to park in a slope, facing downhill. This eliminates the need for people to push the car in the event that the battery fails. I exercise some parking precautions, though, like making sure that the hand brake is activated and jamming a piece of rock in the wheels to prevent it from rolling down.
