How to push start a car

This one is really simple but works only on manual transmission automobiles.

Here are the steps to push-start a car with a dead battery:

  1. Make sure that the handbrake is released and the automobile’s air conditioning, radio and other devices are switched off.
  2. Sit behind the wheel and put the car on 1st or 2nd gear.
  3. Depress the clutch
  4. Have the car pushed, as fast as possible.
  5. When the car is running, release the clutch. the car’s engine should start.
  6. If it doesn’t, go over the steps again but this time, gently depress the accelerator to feed the engine with a little gas.

What I do whenever I suspect that my car has weak batteries, is to park in a slope, facing downhill. This eliminates the need for people to push the car in the event that the battery fails. I exercise some parking precautions, though, like making sure that the hand brake is activated and jamming a piece of rock in the wheels to prevent it from rolling down.
